eNotes, English Notes, is a free online resource for learners of English as a second language. I have been teaching for over 30 years and have accumulated a lot of teaching material — this vault reflects that experience. It is primarily geared toward B2 to C2 learners who want to move beyond textbook grammar and toward genuine, natural expressiveness, though learners at any level can find something useful here.

What eNotes Offers

The vault is organized around five core tracks of fluent-like English:

1. Metaphoric Language — Think in Pictures

Fluent speakers don't translate word-for-word; they think in concrete, physical pictures. This track explores the mental images behind everyday English expressions — from "spill the beans" to "on thin ice" — organized by physical domain (e.g., Water & Navigation, War & Combat, Food & Digestion). Each note explains the real-world experience that gives rise to the metaphor, so you understand the why instead of just memorizing the phrase.

2. Natural Grammar — Master Core Keywords

English relies heavily on a small set of high-frequency keywords. This track breaks down each keyword into:

• Pattern Maps — the grammatical frames (colligation patterns) the keyword naturally fits into.
• Key Lexical Chunks — the collocations, fixed expressions, and formulaic phrases that native speakers use instinctively.

3. Lexical Collocations — Words That Belong Together

Collocations are word pairs or groups that naturally occur together. This track dives deeper into the specific patterns that make English sound natural, organized into four sub-areas:

• Keyword Nodes — deep dives into high-frequency collocation anchors like do, make, and force.
• Discriminations — side-by-side comparisons of near-synonyms (e.g., make vs. do, make vs. force) to clarify usage boundaries.
• Lexical Chunks — formulaic expressions and fixed phrases that native speakers use instinctively.

3 keyword nodes, 2 discriminations, and 12 lexical chunks with more being added regularly.

4. Worksheets — Practice, Get Feedback

Interactive Google Doc worksheets covering grammar from A1 to C2, plus business, professional, and reading topics. Each worksheet includes:
