Discrimination: remember vs. remind
Boundary Overview
The Rule: These two verbs are fundamentally distinct in English due to causation.
- Remember is an internal, independent action. You access a memory inside your own mind without outside intervention.
- Remind is an external, causative action. An external trigger—such as a person, an alarm, or an object—causes someone to recall something.
⚖️ Discrimination Map (False Friends & Boundaries)
Zone 1: Independent Recall vs. External Prompting
- The Rule: If your brain performs the recall independently, use remember. If an outside force (a friend, an alarm, a calendar notification) triggers the thought, use remind.
- Remember Collocations: remember my password, remember to lock the door, as far as I can remember.
- Remind Collocations: remind me to call him, set an alarm to remind you.
- Common Error: ❌ Can you remember me to buy milk? -> ✅ Can you remind me to buy milk?
Zone 2: The Grammar of the Object
- The Rule: Remind almost always requires a person/pronoun object immediately after the verb (
remind + me/him/her/us). Remember generally takes an action, event, or concept directly (remember + infinitive / gerund / noun). - Remind Structure: He reminded me to pay the bill.
- Remember Structure: I remembered to pay the bill.
- Common Error: ❌ Please remember him to bring his laptop. -> ✅ Please remind him to bring his laptop.
Zone 3: Triggering Nostalgia (Remind of)
- The Rule: When a sensory experience, person, or object evokes a past memory or similarity, use the pattern
remind + person + of + noun. - Remind Collocations: reminds me of my childhood, reminds me of home, reminds me of you.
- Common Error: ❌ This song remembers me of my childhood. -> ✅ This song reminds me of my childhood.
